The city of Buenos Aires (Argentina) was named the “World Book Capital 2011” by the selection committee, composed of representatives of the three main professional associations in the book industry and UNESCO, at the conclusion of their meeting on 12 June at UNESCO in Paris.
Buenos Aires is the eleventh city to be designated World Book Capital, after Madrid (2001), Alexandria (2002), New Delhi (2003), Antwerp (2004), Montreal (2005), Turin (2006), Bogotá (2007), Amsterdam (2008), Beirut (2009) and Ljubljana (2010).The city of Buenos Aires was selected for the quality and variety of its proposed programme as well as for the consolidated strategy on which it is based. The Jury welcomed the candidacies of two Sub-Saharan cities (Lagos and Porto Novo) among the seven applicants and looks forward to finding ways of strengthening literature and book culture in this region.
Every year, UNESCO and the three major branches of the global book industry – the International Publishers Association (IPA), the International Booksellers Federation (IBF) and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) – designate a city as World Book Capital for the 12 months between two celebrations of World Book and Copyright Day (23 April). This initiative represents a collaborative effort between representatives of principal stakeholders in the book sector as well as the cities’ commitment to promote books and reading.
